Rosemead, CA: Shin Sen Gumi Hakata Ramen

December 22nd, 2011

Hakata ramen is not easy to come by in my neck of the woods so I was giddy with excitement! I’m not a big fan of L.A. but I do love all the tasty ramen the city has to offer. The wait was excruciating because I was starving but it was worth it! We actually arrived at a good time – there were only 6 or 7 parties ahead of us.

Look at that creamy broth!

Aside from the hakata ramen, the unique thing about this restaurant is that you can have your ramen served “your way”; you have options like noodles: can be hard-normal-soft, broth: can be thick-normal-thin and you have a variety of toppings to choose from.  I chose corn, fried garlic and their newest addition a poached egg.

We started with Tuna Yukke. I’m not a big fan of tuna but this was buttery. Yum.

I thought I was done until I saw fried chicken skin on the menu! Wahoo! One order please! They arrived to the counter deep fried with a side of salt and lime. It was like a chicken rind, a thinner version of a pork rind/chicharrones. Sooo good and fun to eat.

#076 Golden Wheat Beef Flavor Noodles

December 21st, 2011

I am so blessed to have such wonderful friends and family that support my noodle habit.  These came all the way from Singapore courtesy of B.ly.

Don’t you just love the picture on the package??  She looks excited!

There wasn’t a single word in english so I had my mom translate…the package makes a point about the straight noodles! This explains the crazy hair picture. Haha…I expected dried straight noodles but it was the usual curly ramen i know and love.

Gosh these were yummy! The broth tasted like a combo of satay and taiwanese beef noodle soup but a milder version. There’s also a nice toasty finish. Yum! The noodles didnt taste different or special as advertised but that’s ok. As always, I’m just happy that i got to try something new from a different part of the world. Thanks Brian!

#075 Sapporo Ichiban Kitsune Udon

December 17th, 2011

There’s no food in the house since I’m heading out for the holidays so I’ve been hitting the ramen stash. Mmm. Kitsune is so yummy. Very simple and homey. This came pretty close to how fresh tastes. I think the bonito authenticated the flavors. It’s especially wonderful when the broth is yummy since the fried bean curd is a sponge! An egg and some scallion slivers would’ve topped the whole meal off.

It was late but i was hungry so i made myself a snack with the wonton noodles i bought a few days ago at the market.
Mixed sesame oil, oyster sauce and soy into the noodles. My mom used make this as a snack.  I love the simplicity of it.  I add chili oil ( cause i like spicy) and some red vinegar (the acidity compliments the oil).
The noodles were alright, nothing spectacular. The package instructions say to boil for 45 secs, so I did and decided that 45 seconds isn’t long enough for me.  I like my noodles doing doing!  These were a bit tough still.
